The green "Flash OK" indicator on my Sunpak MZ440-PT does not light up when I press the discharge button on the flash. It used to do so, but recently I noticed that it has quit. The flash discharges when used with a camera (Pentax *istDL), but pictures at close range (within 3 feet) are overexposed.

Does this indicate a failure in the flash functionality?

YEP. It sounds like the flash is doing a full discharge ignoring the circuitry and green light. Buy another
