I have a nikon d50 and am lookingto expand my kit. I am possibly thinking of an external flash, but at the same time i need a tele lens. i can only really afford one at the moment. so could people say how they use their externals and what not. thanks.

External flashes are more powerful than built in ones, have their own batteries thus don't drain the camera, may be faster at recharging plus the better ones are bounce and swivel capable.

Bounce allows you to bounce the light off ceilings etc reducing the normal harsh light produced by the flash.

You can also buy a range of diffusers to soften the flash etc etc

As the external flash is high above the camera, the possibility for red eye is reduced.

If your doing low light shooting, portraits, etc, the sb600 will do alot to improve your photography. If you don't need extra reach, then get the flash and don't be afraid to use it.
