The best is a camera AF assist light, or a dedicated flash with AF beam .
You can also use a laser pointer (those pointers used for presentations) with some fine lines pattern .
I tried a pointer with my D7i, and it focus correctly in total darkness. But its not that practical because you have to make the synchronization yourself: turn on the beam, half press shutter to focus, turn off the beam, take the shot.
If I have a need , I would find a way to automate this thing with the camera

Default Let there be light

I have one of those little Camcorder lights that might work.
That and the strobe should make it like day light in July
The FinePix 2400 does not have much in the way of user over-ride.
I don't think the AF can be turned off.
