Default FinePix 3800 take portraits?

Hi. Im trying to take a family portrait with my Fuji 3800. I cant seem to get the lighting right. This is generally a point and shoot camera, with modest to average manual controls like apature priority, exposure compensation, flash brightness, sharpness control, but no ISO other than 100. I dont have any lighting other than what a person would have around the house. Ive tried difussing some bright incandecant lights, and using afternoon sunlight through the window, but I just cant seem to get away from a very stark looking photo. I cant get that "soft" feel my professional taken family portraits have. Any ideas on how I might light and frame with stuff I have at home, and use this camera to take a nice family portrait? Thanks alot everyone. I cant afford to take the family to the studio cause Im laid off from my job right now, and now its kind of a challenge to make this camera do the job for me. Thanks again.
