Default F460 - Horizontal Bands / Scanlines

Father in-law has a FinePix F460 point and shoot. He was having issues with 'scanlines' appearing on ALL of his photos. Luckily he keeps most of his photos on the card and I was able to see that on 8/28/08 his photos were clear but on 9/12/08 they had the bands. Attached is a crop from these two photos. Some other forums had mentioned that this is a 'fairly' common issue and some said it was the shutter. But I am unable to see the shutter OR hear it for that matter. (Perhaps its a 'digital' shutter?)

I realize that its probably cheaper to buy a new one than have this one repaired by a camera shop, but I am fairly handy with a tri-wing screwdriver.

ANY additional info that someone could provide would be greatly appreciated.

It's probably the camera's sensor (lines like that are pretty common when the sensor starts to fail).
