Default Why is there less noise with close ups

When I use the S7000 for close up pictures, the noise is very low, even at 100% 12MP. It doesn't matter if you have zoomed in with the lense or have the camera close to the subject. However the farther you get from the subject, the higher the noise is. It seem the same things happen on other digicams I have used. Even when you crop a detail of the image that is the same size as a wider angle shot, it still shows the wider angle shot as having more noise. I guess its a stupid question but why is it that way?
