Default FinePix 2800 low light focussing

As the FP2800 does not have a focus assist lamp for focussing in dark places ( AF! indicator appears in finder), I have found that all pictures taken at full wide angle (6mm) come out sharp: those taken at telephoto settings DO NOT. The flash exposure (if flash used) appears just slightly underexposed, but acceptable (all settings on Auto). If you keep both eyes open, you can use the autofocus area "brackets" in the finder to center your subject. However, you will get a lot MORE in the picture than the edges of the blacked-out finder (superimposed on the subject as seen by the left eye) seem to indicate.
