I'm currently having this same problem. I made sure my finger wasn't covering the sensor. I just bought this camera yesterday, so I'm definately still learning.

However, in some low light situations, I get better shots without the flash than I do with the flash. (all of this is in Auto mode, since I haven't learned the rest yet). Some shots are almost black even with some light in the room. Anyone know if this is just a defective camera, or should I be changing something.

Yes, make sure you don't cover the sensor. :G

If you are still getting dark phots, try putting the camera in P mode, then playing with exposure compensation, flash brightness, and ISO setting. I have the same camera, and have been very happy with it's low light performance for a camera of its size. I had to mess with the settings more at a banquet to take pictures across the room without a flash, but that is to be expected.

Attatched is a picture taken at ISO-200 in P mode, with the flash turned up. The shutter was 1/60sec, and apeature 2.8/f. The room was pitch black, and it of course gave me the AF error, but usually when I ignore it, it focuses perfectly anyways.
