Looking down.... They tend to like the highest spots when they are young...

Click the link in the word FILM. There's a definition... The word is apparently still in the dictionary...

Hi Mactek,

I've just caught up with the latest pix. Lovely babies - sooooooo sweet -loved the one of the op clinging to the cat. What an incredibly relaxed household you were too....not many cats would be so generous to rodent-likepassangers.

They are quite cute when they are young... The house was quite relaxed. There was also a lop-eared rabbit that would give them rides. Here's a box o' possums. This box only had 4. We sometimes had 8-10. When babies (younger than the ones pictured) they have to be syringe-fed hourly..all day and night..

Hi Mactek,

A couple of final questions...

What happened to mum of 4 and mum of 8? Lack of maternal feeling, or were you an oppossom rescue org?(.....and how nice of you to do 2 hourly feeds when needed.)

Yes, you got it. My wife and I volunteered to feed and care for orphaned opossums. Many of the opossums you see on the road were mothers who were slowed down by their load of little ones. Many of the babies survive in the pouch (marsupials), but will not survive long without food.
One group of people would go out to check on reported road kill, others would raise the orphans to a juvenile stage, then another group had the proper habitat to allow them to learn to fend for themselves before releasing them back into the "wild". Occassionally you'd end up with one that was injured in such a way that it would never last in the wild, so those would end up as "pets". We had 2 "pet" opossums.
I have more opossum stories, but this one has gone long... so next time :-)
