The world has turned into a global village. People travel more often than they do 10 years back. As more and more people are getting into digital cameras, manufacturers must provide international warranty for their products. Even d-SLRs are not backed by international warranty.

Can anyone have a genuine reason for that.

Thanks in advance.

My guess it that it's because corporations are often segmented:

Canon USA vs. Canon Japan etc... They operate as different companies from a financial standpoint. That would make it difficult for them to handle one 'company' selling the product and another 'company' servicing it.

That would be my guess.
