It's not quite the camera I was hoping for, but it sure is a step in the right direction.

I hope for another digital rangefinder, and I have my fingers crossed that someone might find a way to do that with the micro 4/3 standard or (even better) bring in a FF digital rangefinder - Leica are bound to do it sooner or later, but I am really hoping for a Zeiss Ikon digital or even a Bessa Digital. But in the meantime...

Look at what Panasonic have got right!
1. Ultra high resolution 60Hz electronic viewfinder. Wow! That's the first time I've ever seen one that I thought I might be able to live with, and I am a big fan of optical viewfinders.
2. High-speed contrast dectect AF. As fast as a DSLR.
3. Arbitrarily settable AF area!
4. Small (and will be even smaller with the 20mm f1.7 lens due in 2009).
5. Articulating LCD.

This is some revolutionary stuff. With the 20mm on board it sure looks like it might be my next camera. With an optical viewfinder attached (and of course we can get those from Cosina) and a good AF system we may have a decisive moment digital at last.

This is really really exciting to me.

And of course there will be a version with a Leica badge for those who must.

I agree. This is the kind of thing I've been looking for as a carry around. I would love to see Nikon offer the same type of camera...no reason it couldn't be done with an APS sized sensor (or even full frame) to offer the noise benefits. Regardless, this could be my next camera as well.

It does sound very much like the camera I have been hoping for. Still not quite there, maybe, but a major step in the right direction.

I understand that, without a lot of legacy lenses, they could make this kind of move, gaining the advantages of small size as well as the EVF.

My only real quibble is that the sensor is directly exposed every time the lens is removed. I really want to see one which is enclosed with multicoated glass, forever removing the dust problem, and allowing full weather sealing. Pentax?
