Default Jeweler needing 1st digital camera

I am a jeweler and need a digital camera to take pictures of rings, pendants, etc. I want to be able to post the pictures to my website, EBAY, and to make photo copies for customer use . It would be nice to be able to use the camera for personal use also, but not imperative. I need to be able to take clear and concise close up pictures with no flash-back, etc. I have heard that 5 megapixel is enough with 10x macro. I have also heard that I need an SLR camera. I am clueless. Can anyone help?

For the Web (including Ebay) you don't need a lot of megapixels. Most of the pictures you will post will be 640 X 480 pixels. Concentrate your search on cameras with good macro capability. Some of the older Minoltas have a good reputation for this.

You might need some auxilliary lighting to show off your jewelry. Higher megapixel ratings will let you blow up your pictures for galleries and shows, but won't do anything for Web postings.

DSLRs are wonderful for many applications and offer maximum flexibility, but might be overkill for your jewelry needs.

Also look at the Nikon cameras, most models have quite some macro.
Browse through http://www.imaging-resource.com/ for various models macro example pictures.

Note when taking photos of jewels you should not bother about lens casting shadow when using flash. Only a fool will use a build in flash at 10 cm distance of subject, and you are free to guess why.
