Default Bulb Setting?

I was just perusing my Canon 300D manual and came across a 'Bulb' setting. The manual is extremely vague, except to say, use a tripod because the exposure can last up to 2.5 hours (?)

Can someone explain a bit more? What would Bulb setting be used for and how?

I might not understand it correctly, but I thought that might help someone who was asking about shooting astronomy as well.

Bulb setting is something that is used with a cable release or "bulb" that you squeeze. The idea is you hold it open for as long as you wish. Becuase this is a long exposure, a tripod is required.
