Default Hockey team and individual photos

I am just starting to take an interest in photography. I have been asked to do some individuals and a team photo for a pee wee hockey team. I have no idea what lens to use or even how to use my flash?? Sorry I am so ignorant but I am trying very hard to study and learn. Any hints and suggestions on settings?
Thanks for any help! I have tried to take a group photo on automatic and found it a bit fuzzy.

First question - in most leagues, the league has contracted a photographer to take team and individual photos. You need to confirm the league has NOT hired a pro. If they did and this team doesn't like the results or prices you should steer clear. So, confirm there is no contracted professional doing the T&I first.
