The problem you are having is that there is not enough light available to properly expose the camera. The camera program senses this, and leaves the shutter open longer to allow more ambient light to enter the lens. Because of the slower shutter speed, your pictures are more prone to be distorted (blurry) because of camera shake.

One solution is to put your camera on a tripod so that it doesn't move while the shutter is open. Use a remote or the self timer to snap the picture so you don't shake the camera while depressing the shutter release.

Another is to add lighting, via a flash or other means. Lastly, you can set your camera to manual or aperture priority and open the lens up as far as possible, but the camera's electronics have probably already done this for you.
