Default Recommend please: compact, 28mm equiv wide zoom, low light

I know, I know. Lots of cameras out there. I've had an Olympus D450z (I should never have dropped it) and a Toshiba PDR25 (OK but limited). They have helped me form my idea of what I want. The reviews here are great but not easy to search and sort so ... would anyone care to offer some opinions.

I don't NEED more than 3 mp. More is not bad, it just doesn't serve any purpose for me. 2 mp would actually be fine.

I want a camera compact and light enough to slip into a jeans pocket. With a built-in lens cover that doesn't get lost.

I want at least a 3x zoom. I want the zoom to be a bit more generous on the wide-angle side than most. At least the equivalent of a 28mm lens on a 35mm camera.

I want decent low light capability. To be able to shoot in a reasonably well lit room at night without flash. Needs to be able to focus.

Oh, yeah, and a decent way to handle backlighted photo situations.

I want it to use AA batteries. (Or AAAs would be OK but I don't want to be locked into a proprietary rechargeable pack.)

Below this comes the 'would be nice' stuff.

A fast shutter response.

External flash capability.

Good controls.

That's about it. I'm a snapshooter, not a photographer. If there are manual settings available, that's great but I can live without them.

Any suggestions? I don't mind searching for older models if they fill my need.
