Default Outside group shots help

I have a few family functions coming up. It will be outside, shooting a 50D with a Tamron 17-50. Most I want to shoot candid, so it could be one person, or multiple people. I figure I would shoot AV, but would I use one shot AF, or AI focus? And should I use all focus points, and the camera would decide, I figure if I used single point, more than a few people, some might be out of focus?

Thanks for your help

Outdoors, you should have plenty of light, and since you want to get as many people in focus as possible, set your aperture to f/8 or smaller, for good DOF. Your autofocus system, whether you use single or multiple points, is only going to focus at one position anyway, so I tend to use single center point, in order to be able to choose where it will focus.
