Default How to safely clean the lens?

I have some spots on my nikon 3100's lens. What's the best way to clean the lens? What kit or supplies would you recommend? Thanks.

I use distilled water and Viva towels I put through the washer. Maybe a touch of dishwashing liquid if it is resistant to plain water, but rinse it off with distilled water after.

I keep a jug of distilled water around for all varieties of things so there is no need to leave a film of hard water residue. If you have soft water you might not need distilled water, but a gallon is less than a buck at the grocery store.

Lens coatings are pretty chemical resistant, but some might discolor them. That usually doesnít effect the photo quality but I donít mess even with alcohol. Never use rubbing alcohol as it has lubricants that leave a film. Cleaning kits are effective and I had one back in my 35mm days, but I find the distilled water works just as well without leaving any discoloration.
