Default Advise For A First Camera

Hi Guys,

Just joined up to the group and have probably the most
irratating, constantly ocurring newbie question of all In the
market for a camera and am looking for advise. I'll try to tell you
what the intended purpose for the camera is and a budget.

Budget is $400-$500 MAX (don't want to deal with the low priced mail
order shops on something I can't actually touch before I buy--so it
needs to come from a camera shop or Best Buy, ect.)

8X10 will be the biggest prints but would like to have the ability to
go a bit larger on occasion.

Need a movie mode with sound--nothing more than 60 sec. of video but
it will get posted to the net as will most of the pics.

From what I have been told so far, I should be looking for a 3-4 meg
camera with 3x opticle zoom with movie mode. Any other advise and
brands to look at or stay away from?

For me movie mode is not important but maybe a nice to have if everything else you want is on the camera.

For me the optical zoom is important as it greatly increases the flexibility of the camera. Digital zoom is just a marketing gimick in my opinion.

I wouldn't recommend any brand in particular but I would look for a recognisable brand. Sony, Olympus, Fuji, Nikon, Kodak, Minolta, Canon for example.

Default Camera choice

I recently purchased the Kodak DX6490. From the sounds of it you might want to check it out. 4 megapixel. Auto and manual modes. 10x optical and 3x digital (30 total). 2.2 inch LCD viewfinder. I purchased mine through Dell computers about 2 weeks ago. Total price with shippiing 419.00. I checked a fair amount of camera's as well and for the price there are few others with all the features. good luck. Ken
