Need recommendations for a prime portrait lens and secondly a macro lens for 10D. I currently have zooms, but want prime lenses for this kind of work. What do you say? Much obliged for your responses.

EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM

Kill 2 birds with one stone!!!! 100mm is a good focal length, but if using a dslr, take into account the crop factor! You will need some space to use it. I sometimes use the ef 50mm 1.4 USM, nice lens! For most shots, I still use the 35-135 USM while trying not to use the far ends of the range...somewhere around 80mm is best. IMHO!

The usual focal length of a portrate lens is 80mm, but that isn't a hard and fast rule (i.e. a bit either way will still work.) But with the 1.6 crop factor of the 10D, that 100mm that freefly suggests would really be a 160mm... double the length of what is normally recommended. It is a good lens (very good) and it would do the job. But I'd bet you'd probably find its focal length a bit long.

I might suggest the 50mm f2.5 macro. It might be too short for general macro work (unless your subjects let you get really close) but it would work very well as a portrate lens.

You don't say what your subject will be for macro work, so its hard to suggest something for that other than in general terms.
