Default taking pictures of insects or other small objects

I am looking to purchase a digital camera under say $700 to take photos of small insects and to be able to zoom in on details.
What cameras or features should I consider?
Any suggestions?

I use a Nikon CP4500 and although I've mainly used it for digital photography through a telescope I've also started to use it for some close-up work. I'm planning to publish some more photographs this weekend but for now have a look at -

There may be better cameras but I'm happy with this one.

The Nikon is a good suggestion--there are several Nikons at various prices with excellent macro abilities. You might also consider the Olympus C-4000, which has an excellent macro mode and is a great camera overall at a very good price. In addition to Steve's reviews, check out reviews at imaging-resource.com for samples and discussions of macro shots.

If scaring of the critters by getting too close is a concern, you might want to get a camera with a long telephoto lens that will focus relatively close in. Worth checking out is the Olympus C-730 (10x), the HP 850 (8x--both of these were just reviewed by Steve), and some more expensive models from Nikon, Sony and Minolta. (There's also the Fuji S602, with 6x zoom, an excellent camera in many ways, but with unusually bad barrel distortion in supermacro mode.)
