Well its interesting in how we are all different. Lets not forget we all take different subjects.

For nature shots, 12x optical zoom is excellent. Gets you closer to a bird, maybe in flight, closer to a deer and add a Nikon 6T to the front or the equivalent and you have a very high ratio true macro camera. So how close do you want to get to a bear or eagle in the wild.

I use digital zoom for well over 80% of my work to avoid vignetting which occurswhen I add reversed 35mm slr lenses. So we are all different obviously. I use digital zoom as an on camera tool. Very simple really.

It does depend allot on what YOU take, not what we take. Some herereally think that weshould all be the same but we are not :-)

All the best and yes, I can'ttake what I want without at least 10x optical, IS and digital zoom :-)
