Default Minimum MegaPixel

I am looking at jumping in to the digicam pool. I am looking for an semi-advanced model that I can grow into. I have never used any type of DC before, relying on film and a quality scanner. My questions are; how poor are 2 MP pictures? Are 3 MP pictures really that much better? At 75ft I would like to take pictures of waterskiiers (from the towboat) and possibly crop those images as necessary. Any advice?

A good 2 megapixel camera with a long zoom lens should be fine for what you need. I routinely crop 800x600 selections from the 1600x1200 pictures I take with my Olympus C-2100. I would strongly recommend a digitally stabilized lens for taking pictures from a boat in the middle of a lake, so you might start with a look at this one.
