Although this benefit could be argued around, another win for compression is that there is less to data save. That means a faster save time and faster turn around time for the next picture (or set of pictures if the camera has a decent cache for the save media.)

Of course you could argue (and maybe you meant it by saing "memory and processing") that ram is so cheap now that cameras should be able to handle many picture before it has to stop to write to out to the media. Heck, how much ram would you need to cache enough pictures to never have to stop taking pictures? Would it really cost that much? Sounds like a nice feature for a pro camera....
