Default 2MP or the 3MP Nikon? That is the question!

Here is my problem, I currently have a Nikon coolpix 2100 and am happy with it, but being new to the digital camera world I was wondering whether I should have spent the extra $100 to get the 3100.
My main concern is:
If my goal is a sharp smooth 4" x 6" or a 5"x7" picture will the 3 MP camera do a better job after the raw image is reduced (or resed up to 300dpi in photoshop) than the 2MP camera?

No, for 5x7, all 3mp will do is allow you to space to crop an image. For a 5x7 print, the finished picture will contain exactly the same number of pixels whether it was taken by a 2 or 3 mp camera and there is only a difference if you ever want 8x10 or larger.[/code]
