Default wideangle lens

I have been looking for a compact digicam to buy but none of them seem to have a wideangle lens. Lot of them have 3x optical zoom but where are the digicams with zoom lenses which can go from wideangle to tele? Do they exist?

Actually, most do...any lens that can go less than 50mm (35mm camera equivalent) is wide angle. For instance, my own camera has a 10x optical zoom, and the lens goes from 38mm-380mm...from 49-38mm is wide angle. There are other cameras that can go wider, but you'll have to read the reviews at sites like http://www.steves-digicams.com

The Minolta DiMage 7x cameras sport a 28mm-200mm (35mm eqv.) optical system, but the 7x series is not exactly in the 'compact' class.

FWIW, the diminutive Sony U20 has a 33mm focal length eqv. but no zoom.

Nikon CoolPix 5000 also start at 28 mm; I think that the CP5000 and the D7x's are the only non-detachable lens digicam that can go down to 28 mm without add-on lens.

It has to do with the math... A larger number at the wide end will create a longer lens after the X mutiplier. Check out the D7/D5 they have the same lens but with a different CCD one goes from 28-200 and the other from 35-250 (or 38-270 if they stretched the numbers)! It help sell the cameras with 'mine is bigger than yours factor'

Although I'm looking at picking a lens for my next camera a 70-200 with a 1.6x factor makes it 320mm at the long end! The things you can shoot @ that narrow of an angle are pretty limited, unless it's a sport event or something! A wide angle is much more useful most of the time, especially indoor... :?
