Default What solution to use to clean the lens

I have a newbie question. What solution do I use to clean a digital camera lens? I accidently put a finger print mark on the lens. I know you are not suppose to use stuff like windex, etc. What can I use?

I'd recommend any specific lens cleaner. Or at a push Isopropyl Alcohol.

Dont use detergents or other chemicals on it as u may remove the protective coatings on the lens.

I've heard the best thing to use is a micro-fiber cloth.

Another (which won't work for the problem you have) is an air brush. No the compressed air type, just the blower you do with two fingers with a little brunsh on the end. Of course, this won't work for the oil mark from a finger print.

The danger of a lens cleaner is that you can only hope that it won't effect the anti-flare coating which is on the lens. This might be less of an issue for consumer grade cameras (they might have fairly simple coatings, if any at all.) But it's something to think about.

Go to a *proper* camera shop and pick up a lens cleaning kit. If you wish, they can even clean it themselves but they will be using the same tools.

My formula is a blower brush and a "Pentax" micro-fibre cloth. I used to use a Calotherm cloth, but there are concerns about what it may do to some lens coatings.

I apply the blower brush to make sure that any dust particles are removed, then breath lightly on the lens in order to mist it.

I then use the lens cleaning cloth to remove any smears on the lens.

Costco sells a Optical Care Kit for little $ in their Optical Department that says it is good for camera lenses too. Free refills.
