I pulled the buy trigger and bought the Sanyo CG6 at Wal-Mart.

Did some simple testing and -- Fishy's correct -- I noted that the Sanyo records a small amount of "white noise" even in silent indoor room conditions.

Of course, I use Sony MiniDisc recorders for field audio so this won't make any difference to me.

In spite of the white noise issue with the Sanyo, my impression is that the overall quality of the audio is still far better than it is with the terrible Aiptek audio.

If Aiptek could improve the audio on these low cost camcorders, however, they would truly threaten the Japanese manufacturers.
