Bizarre Video Distortion - Zi8

Howdy. Been a long time reader/lurker around here. I've learned a lot from the reviews and posts over the years.

I recently picked up a Zi8 to record mostly live concerts to go along with my hobby of doing a lot of live music photography. I mostly got it due to the external mic option which is great.

I've only used the Kodak a few times so far but have had pretty good results for it being a small flash based camera.

However, last weekend I encountered the most bizarre thing I've ever seen - this weird rippling distortion of the video image.

Anyone ever come across anything like this? It's almost like the upright bass is literally distorting the lens but that doesn't seem remotely possible. Not to mention that I've used it 2 weekends ago in a club that has the most obnoxiously loud sound system in town and the bass was so powerful there you could flat out feel it hitting your chest and I didn't see anything like this.

Curious if anyone has any ideas.

Thanks for the info. Having searched for "distortion" "rippling" etc never brought that phrase up. Now that I know, yep that's exactly what it is.

thats just a guess. i seem to remember a video of someone shooting a helicopter from 20 feet away and getting the same effect

if you shoot with a camera with a ccd you wont get that effect. no pocket cameras have one tho
