My old Mustek 1200 EPIII scanner will not powerup anymore and i'm figuring it has gone on to that great scanner graveyard in the sky . It may have been slow and parallel but it did a great job on pictures and text. Well time to go USB so what good scanners are out for around $100 and below. It must do text as well pictures but negative isn't a must. I have pagis suite so would be nice if it still worked with that but that also is old and not even supported anymore. Still running windows 98SE and USB 2.1.

This is probably the best scanner for the price: http://www50.shopping.com/xPC-PERFEC...APTER~S-P~OR-0
It was at least one reviewer's favorite: http://printscan.about.com/od/scanne...O_scanners.htm

It is fast and has film and slide capability. I would avoid those skinny scanners that get their power from the USB. They use CIS instead of CCD sensors and have no depth of field. They are also usually slow.
