I am interested in purchasing a scanner that will do a great job scanning old photos. It needs to be fairly fast and lightweight as I will also be using it to copy public records for genealogical research as well as graduate research in libraries, etc.

I had an Epson Perfection 4870 that I purchased for my Journalism class. It was too big to carry. I found a couple of Canoscans LIDE 80 and 500F that look pretty good online. They are both 2400 dpi and fairly inexpensive. Is that sufficient for what I need? Does anyone have one of these?

Thanks

I really liked the Lide 80 until I recently noticed dust and smear marks on the underside of the glass.

If it's possible to remove and clean the glass (does anyone know how?) I would recommend the Lide 80. If it's not possible, look else where.
