Default Nikon stepper motor failure

I have received an error message indicating stepper motor failure on my Nikon LS 2000 film scanner. I checked around on the Internet but haven't come up with much information except that it's a pretty common problem. I contacted Nikon and they said send it in but no estimates on costs or turn around time are available. Anybody have any idea what something like this costs to fix? Are there any other things I could try to get it running again before sending it in? Thanks. Meredith
