How do people set up a slave flash unit with the DX7630?

I've got the mechanics ok - old Vivitar 283 connected to an optical slave trigger. The camera's flash sets off the Vivitar, and the Vivitar flashes while the camera's shutter is open.

But the result is almost totally white overexposed pictures. If this camera has a TTL flash sensor, it isn't working.

I realize I'll have to experiment with manual settings, but is there a way to predict the right setting? I don't always have time to take 3-4 shots while adjusting EV/shutter/aperture.

p.s., the Vivitar guide number is 120 (ISO100/ft). I used to know what that means, but whatever it means, the 283puts out a lot of light. Adjustable, but there's no way to throttle it down except automatically via hot shoe / TTL flash sensor.
