Yesterday wheb turning on my A1 the screen was as usual black, after taking the lens cap off it remained black , as did the screen finder, all other functions seemed to be working but with no picture and* a black screen my camera is now useless.I have had it for 3 years with limited use* and it is great consition, this is my first problem and my knoweldge is limited.... I know if I take it to a shop then I will get charged a lot for I dont know what....any advice would be great.....

I have just had the same problem with my A1.iIt was about the same age and also out of warrenty.
I have just sent mine to the appointed repairer who will replace the CCD fre of charge if it turns out to be that. It is a common problem with many cameras that are fitted with a Sony CCD.
