I have the same thought . Even with my film SLR, I don't often use my ttl flash just because it's a shoe mount, I feel the ensemble unbalanced vertically.
The only drawback with handlemount/bracket flash for me is it is a lil bit difficult to access the zoom and focus ring.

Hi, I've got a Sigma EF-430ma Super that I use with my analogue XTSi, looking at the specs it should be compatible with my 7Hi but I haven't tried it yet, it certainly gives excellent results on the XTSi, strobe, auto-zoom, wireless remote etc. all work perfectly and here in the UK it's under 100 ($150). There's a review of it here http://www.pcphotoreview.com/pscCame...0_3121crx.aspx and the SIgma web page is here http://www.sigma-photo.com/html/flashes.htm

KCan, agreed. The L-bracket configuration can be cumbersome to use, but preferable to mounting a large flash on top of the D7.

I don't have the same feeling of dread when I put the 120J on top of my N90s however.
