My second trip to the Playa, specifically to take pictures #1 & 2. I got stranded out there when my truck wouldn't start, but that just gave me more time to shoot in the setting sun. (Never travel in Death Valley in the summer, alone, without a satellite phone.)

More pictures, and the trip story is here: http://www.erikburrows.com/index.php?node_id=187

Thanks Bob! The nearest small town, Stovepipe Wells, is about 60 miles away, on the other side of the mountain range to the right of the first and second pictures.

Very nice images, I'm with Bob H. on this and like the second one best. Just can't help asking though: did you put that rock there yourself? If so you did a nice job of hiding any footsteps! :-)

Hahaha... No. That's just one of hundreds of rocks on this lake bed that move, and leave trails in the mud. It's why I go there, it's just so odd. The prevailing theory is that the winds in the canyon move the rocks when the surface of the lakebed gets slippery with rain.

Here are more pictures of the lakebed and the moving rocks:

Hey, that's a fast response!

Those stones are just plain weird, they do look like good photo fodder though, just don't go getting stuck in that place:O

John.

Nice shots, eburrows. Is that true about the rocks?

It's my best guess, and the most popular explanation from what I've read.

My only other guess would be aliens. One of the tracks did look like the symbol for Prince.
