They are both lovely!! I love the sea and lighthouses. The smell of the water the wind during a storm is comparable to nothing else!

Great shots!

Another lighthouse on the Oregon Coast. Can't remember the name, but it's close to the Sea Lion Caves.

This August I stayed with my family in the Bird Observatory, Fair Isle, S of Shetland, UK. Also staying there was a team of very hard-looking, big & muscular & shaven-headed maintenance men from the Northern Lighthouse Board, in charge of all the UK lighthouses off Scotland, plus the Isle of Man. They were fitting a huge array of solar panels to the North Light on Fair Isle. Another team (of less-well paid contractors from Hartlepool, NE England), were also there, (but staying in a bed&breakfast where it was lights out at 10pm), busily painting the South Light).

One of the NLB men got out his laptop and showed me his fantastic collection of lighthouse photos, including almost all the Scottish ones, many of which are on small rocks a long way from anywhere. He'd been to all of them and photographed the lot. He was aiming to win the competition for the in-house Christmas card illustration, and one of his colleagues there was going for the house calendar. I wish I could show you his collection. Perhaps you could track him down on the internet.

Here is a picture of my own of Muckle Flugga lighthouse off Unst, Shetland, the most northerly inhabited outpost of the former British Empire until recently: now it's automatic & remote-controlled, so it's uninhabited. The chap I mentioned went swimming (in a survival suit) off the pier there, and had the pictures to prove it.

Keep the lights on! Alan T
