I was the one who started this topic, so I thought that I should update where I am at.

I bought the Lexar firewire compactflash reader. On my Mac, the cards mount as if they are external drives. Copying in the operating system by dragging the files to a folder on my internal drive takes one or two seconds per image. These are 1.4 MB images from a Nikon 5700. This is much faster than the USB connection directly from the Coolpix!

On the other hand if I use Nikon View 5 to transfer the files, the speed is the same as when I use USB! This software is painfully slow! I'm guessing at 30-40 seconds per image. Nikon View adds a thumbnail icon so that you can preview the image from the OS. I don't know what else it may do or why it is so slow. As soon as I post this, I'm going to look for any updates beyond 5.1.0 on Nikon's web pages.
