I bought one of those small $25 Lexar compact flash card readers at Radio Shack some time ago. It still works, but tonight when I went to plug in a card, Windows XP told me that there had been a powersurge in the USB device, and that I would have to "reset" it to be able to continue to use it. Then I had to reboot. Now the card reader works, but I noticed that it was very hot. And when I removed the card, it was very hot too. The card even had a very slight odor of overheated electronics, if you know what I mean.

Is the card reader about to bite the dust, or should I try connecting it to a different USB 2.0 port, or even one of the USB 1.0 ports on my computer? Would that help?

I would take it back if I were you. The heat, smell and XP "power surge" warning tells me there's a problem with the unit.
