I am about to purchase an Olympus C-765 Ultra Zoom camera and I'd like to purchase a 256 MB xd Picture Card right off the bat.

My question is - in order to access what's on the card is an Olympus MAUSB100 xd Picture USB Card Reader/Writer necessary? Or can I just plug the camera directly into my computer and access the files that way (as I've done with previous, basic digital cameras I've used)?

If I'm able to access what's on the card by plugging my camera into my computer, what advantages exist in choosing the card reader?

Thank you in advance for your help.

The main advantage is saving the batteries on the camera for picture taking. Downloadss waste a lot of juice. I often format my cards in the reader as well.

You don't need to buy a card reader to upload pics to your PC.
