Default Mem Up card wiped clean by Nikon

In an emergency last fall in Europe, I purchased a Mem Up memory card for use with a Nikon Coolpix 775. It's worked fine -- until today. In trying to transfer images from my vacation, I got a series of ominous messages: "Communications error," "Incompatible card," and, finally, "card contains no images." Sure enough, 54 images had been wiped off the card. Nikon says, in effect, "tough luck; you're just fortunate that it worked as long as it did." Is Nikon right, that only Lexar and San Disk are reliable in the long term? And can I do anything to retrieve those 54 images?

There have been several links to software which can recover pictures from a CF card. The problem is that I believe they need to be able to see the card before they can work. I assume if you put the card into a CF reader, it doesn't work (you can some error like what you listed)?

You'll find software file recovery programs here:

Note that they all require the use of a card reader or that you can access the camera like a removable drive.
