Pre-ordered a new Pentax K10D, looking for recomendations on lense over 300M, considering the Sigma 50-500m.

Anyone have experience with this lense?

Recomendations on over 300mm alternatives?

I had the 50-500 and found myself using it at 500mm all the time for wildlife. For starters the 50-500 is already slow at 500mm and must then be stopped down more to get good sharpness. I suggest a good prime like a fast 300 or 400mm with a 1.4 TC for extended reach. I cannot speak for other primes with extenders but the Canon L Primes, specifically the 300 2.8 is awesome with the 1.4x and 2x.

If your not going to get a prime then the 50-500 is probably near the top of the list for wildlife use.

Try a sigma 120-300 f/2.8. It's a tack sharp lens and works very well with a 1.4x & 2x TC. I'm not sure but, I think NHL used/uses that lense and takes some fantastic shots with it. I think it's about $2K new. Wit the TC's used singley it would give a great range of 120mm to 600mm and only f/5.6 at 600mm.

For a moderately-priced zoom lens ($500-900), the Bigma is a good suggestion. My personal review is posted at...
