Newbie here so be gentle.

I have several hundred old jpg's which have been transfered from a crashed laptop to my current machine.

My problem is when I try to open I get the following:

cant determine type - MS photo editor

unknown or invalid jpg marker type is found - Adobe Photoshop

My photos seem to all be about 300kb

Can anyone help

thanks in advance

What size should the files be? They seem small to me but could have been low resolution and more compressed. If two applications can't open the files then I have to assume they are corrupted and not worth much.

Look around http://www.tucows.com/ or http://www.freewareweb.com/ for JPEG repair tools but I doubt they will help much.

Your best bet is to try and retransfer the images from the bad drive using a product designed for that purpose.

Some of the tools for recovering images totally ignore the file system. So, if it's severely corrupted, you can still recover some usable images.

Try PhotoRec (a powerful open source utility). You'll see a download menu choice on the left side of this page:

It can recover a number of file types, reconstructing them based on file headers it finds. Here are some of the file types it can recover:
