Default Camera to learn the art of photography

Hello all,
I'm totally new to the art of photography and i am going to purchase a digital camera soon.
I've narrowed it down to either the canon g3 or the nikon 5700.
Basically,i want to know which of the two cameras would be more suited as a camera to learn photography with and when i say that i mean ease of use(.ie menu navigation, etc) and which camera offers the most room for growth.

Thanks in advance,

The Nikon 5700 will fit easier in the hand, or it did with mine.

The Nikon does have a 8x optical zoom, while the Canon I believe is only 4x.

Other than that I am not sure of the differences. Though here on the westcoast of Canada, the Canon is $999 ($500 less than Nikon) while the Nikon is at $1499.

Not much help.. though am I

I had the CP5700 and got lots of good shots with it. It's not good in low light - but it's a magnificient camera.
Feel free to visit my England gallery on my website, if you like. All the photos there are shot with CP5700.

IMHO it's the 8x zoom vs the much better (smaller) packaging of the Canon .... hmmmmmmmm
