Default Camera for shooting sporting events

I am looking to purchase a new digital camera and would like to shoot our Athletic Events with it and get some decent quality shots with it. I'm looking between the 400-700 dollar range. I have my eye on the Olympus C-5050 but are there others that would serve my purpose better for about the same amount?

While the 5050 has a fast lens, most of the action shots I take of sporting events are from the sidelines, and a big zoom (10x) is quite helpful. Many use teleconverters to get in even closer to the action (1.7x, for example). Keep in mind that lighting is critical when selecting your camera. While most any good camera will do during daylight hours, stopping the action in low light requires a fast lens, great flash, and often a camera that will tolerate higher ISO settings. If you have specific questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

The reviews I've read about the C-5050 say good things. My G3 works well, I was recently at a national motocross race and got some good pictures without any add-on accessories. Oh yeah, make sure whatever camera you get has a good continuous setting. The bigger zoom will be a plus as it's tough to get close to the action unless you are a pro shooter and have that access. Good luck and have fun!
