i know this is a wide-open question with wide-open answers, but here goes: I just ordered a Rebel Xsi. If i want to do portraits (or portrait-quality) with it, what would a basic setup be comprised of? would a speedlight be enough? or do i need the diffuser umbrella setup? what cameras do portrait pros use? i know its not the camera that makes the shot, but just asking for some info. and possibly a website that may answer some of these questions. thx

The camera will be fine. Much of portrait work is about lighting, posing and backgrounds. I would suggest looking in the Studio Lighting, Flash and Others sectin of this site - there is a sticky post with a lot of helpful reads. And you'll find a lot of folks in that forum that enjoy portrait photography and can give you good advice on what a good setup is to get started.
