Default Canon powershot a80

I have recently bought the Canon Powershot A80. It seems, however, that I have a problem with the camera's focus. When the blitz is deactivated I really cannot make good pictures - they become quite blurred and not detailed (the camera indicates that on the display). Obviously one would like to make detailed pictures without the blitz so you can catch an object in a specific light. It cannot be right that one always have to use a tripod?!

How can I get sharper pictures without the blitz and a tripod?

Push up the ASA, open up the aperture - but then you'll have to start accepting some noise. When there's insufficient light and you're maxed out on sensitivity you've got 2 choices - tripod slow shutter (no good if movement) or Blitz (no good if subject far away).

Same with all cameras, including film. PS, are you sure you got focus lock in the first place? VOX
