Camera dead.
Have not used it for awhile.
Sat with batteries,no leak.
Changed for charged ones.
Got intermitant chimes, replaced batteries with old ones, worked but died shortly afterwards.
Bought new batteries, but camera still dead.
Any info. appreciated.

Have you cleaned the contacts in the battery compartment? I have seen others with this problem where there was enough corrosion/oxidation to cause problems.
Another way to test is with an external power supply - a six-volt battery and wired plug works well if you don't have an AC adapter.

Chances are, it is just a battery or contact issue (as Brian mentioned).

The DiMAGE 7 series cameras are known to be a bit "power hungry", and will often not work correctly without good high capacity NiMH batteries that are making a good enough connection (and sometimes contacts can look clean, even though they still have a bit of oxidation impacting current flow).

What kind of new batteries did you buy for it? You'll want high capacity (i.e., 2000mAh or better) NiMH rechargeables for best results. Alkalines are going to be useless in it.
