Default D3000 lens suggestions

I am realitively new dslr owner. I enjoy shooting photos of my dogs and kids along with flowers and wildlife. I have the 18-55 kit lens that came with my Nikon D3000. I am looking for a lens that gives me a little more range and the ability to blur the backgrounds a bit more, while doing this for under 500 bucks. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Ok, "dogs", "kids", and "wildlife" suggest a longer lens (up to 300mm or so, "flowers" suggests a lens with close focusing capability, and "the ability to blur the backgrounds" suggests a large aperture. Doing all that with a single lens will be tough, and doing it all with a single lens for under $500 is impossible.

You may want to look at Nikon's AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR or Tamron's SP 70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di VC USD. They are both good lenses that should do most of what you want.
