I've returned the camera. I did explain to the staff member what the problem was. He said it certainly sounded like the camera had a problem. Staff members at this particular store sell cameras along with other electronics, but are not terribly knowledgeable, so I just took my refund and said "thank you".

"I think that any lens over about 24x is asking too much of the optics & camera shake does become a bit issue"

Phil, I did read something to that effect while reading some of the reviews. It seems Zoom is the new "must have" as megapixels used to be....There's not much point having a large zoom, if it can't be handled properly. That's not to say that someone with more "know how" could not get a good shot with this camera. It's just not going to be me....
